Meaning & Analysis

The composition is set against a rich, dark background, which contrasts with the bright greens and reds of the foliage and flowers. The checkered tablecloth adds texture and depth, with the shaodow cast by the tall vase extending to the right of the composition and cut by the border of the print. Hockney's skilled manipulation of the software's brush settings and colour palette is evident in the varied strokes and tonal gradations throughout the image. The artwork's title, referencing its creation date, announces this as the first in Hockney's practice of daily observation and creation during his stay in Normandy over the course of the COVID-19 lockdown.
