Meaning & Analysis

The artwork features an arrangement of tulips in a cut glass vase, rendered with expressive strokes and a rich colour palette. Hockney's technique captures the interplay of light and shadow on the glass and flowers, with light refracting from the glass vase to the left of the composition. The checkered tablecloth beneath the vase adds texture and depth to the composition, and a neat contrast with the organic forms that extend up the centre of the picture plane. This piece is part of a series of floral still lifes that Hockney produced daily during 2021 over the course of the global pandemic, each exploring the potential of digital art in representing traditional subjects. The use of the iPad, a digital device for creating art, allows for a directness in his work, as seen in the fluid brushstrokes and bold colours of the tulips.
