Garfield is a signed screen print produced by the renowned American artist and designer, KAWS in 2020. Coming in an edition size of 20, the print shows the outline of Garfield, the much-loved cartoon cat from the American comic strip created by Jim Davis. While Garfield is conventionally rendered in orange, KAWS choses to only use the cartoon’s outline, which he then fills with a set of distinctive graphics in bold and vibrant colours. Bold purple, red, green and blue dominate the composition which resonates with KAWS’ other graphic artworks.
Garfield belongs to KAWS’ Outlines collection, a series of artworks all of which take the outline of a famous cartoon character which KAWS then fills with graphic patterns. Despite eliminating most of the cartoons’ distinguishing features, the figures are all easily identifiable as icons of popular culture.
KAWS’ artistic style can be compared to Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, two leading 20th century artists who emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. Like these artists, KAWS started experimenting with graffiti when he was a teenager growing up in New Jersey and his street art origins shine through in artworks like Garfield and those in the Outlines collection.
American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
