Untitled (Snoopy) is a signed screen print made by American artist and designer, KAWS. Produced in 2020, the print comes in an edition size of 20 and shows the silhouette of Snoopy the dog, the beloved cartoon character from the Peanuts comic strip. The black cut-out shape is filled with green, blue and pink dripping spray paint which harks back to KAWS’ time spent spray painting the streets of New York.
The print is part of the Outlines collection, a body of artworks all of which take the outline of a famous cartoon character which KAWS then fills with graphic patterns. The works in the Outlines collection were produced in the late 2000s, a period which was marked by KAWS’ experimentations with incorporating television characters into his artworks. The artist was well known for creating his own stock of figurative characters, such as Companion, Chum, Bendy and Accomplice. However, in this collection, KAWS appropriates and adapts already well-known figures, imbuing them with his unique artistic style.
As well as Snoopy the Dog, other notable characters that have featured in KAWS’ artworks include the Smurfs, characters from Sesame Street and The Simpsons. KAWS’ love of animation and cartoons can be traced back to his studies at the New York School of Visual Arts where he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration, as well as his work as a freelance animator for Jumbo Pictures.
