Meaning & Analysis

Apple Tree is representative of Opie’s late graphic style that strikes a balance between photographic representation and his more simplistic, linear drawings. The focal point of the image is the flowering apple tree branch that is depicted with thick, black outlines whilst also including smaller details like petals and leaves. The backdrop is blurred in relation to the foreground, further emphasising the photographic nature of the print. Unlike many of Opie’s works throughout his career, this print includes fine details such as insects and an airplane in the very far distance.

Throughout his career, Opie has created landscape prints from places that he has visited, and this particular series recalls works such as his Japanese Landscapes (2009) and Winter (2012) and Cornish Coast series (2017). Many of his landscape works take the form and composition of traditional landscape paintings, however French Landscapes subverts this with the use of lenticular printing, vertical composition and the dramatic contrast between foreground and background.

  • Julian Opie, born in 1958, dances through the contemporary art scene with a distinctive digital allure. A trailblazer of the 1980s New British Sculpture movement, Opie's work is a highly stylised blend of Pop Art and minimalism which navigates the intersection of technology and visual expression. From his early experiments with computer-generated art to his iconic portraits and animated installations, Opie's work exudes a captivating simplicity. His signature style, marked by bold lines and reduced forms, is internationally recognisable and has made him a key player in British contemporary art.
