Jet Stream is a lenticular print by Julian Opie from his 2013 French Landscapes series that shows a cluster of yellow flowers in a field set against a rural backdrop. Two thirds of the print is taken up by the clear blue sky, with a contrail from an airplane in the distance cutting across the empty space.
Taking the same subject and form of an earlier LCD work of the same name from 2011, this series is indicative of Opie’s desire to use the same subject across a variety of mediums. The original LCD work shows the airplane moving across the sky and the flowers waving in the wind. Jet Stream in its lenticular print form emulates this movement and is indicative of Opie’s interest in using computer technology as a key component to his work.
Opie has demonstrated a keen interest in movement and animation throughout his career, often using movement as a form of realism and to create dynamic images of modern life. Combined with photographic realism, the use of the moving image in this print functions to create an uncanniness that toes the line between representation and reality. The photographic nature of this image is emphasised by the way in which the backdrop is blurred in relation to the flowers in the foreground.
