Meaning & Analysis

This work documents the street artist’s ‘Invasion’ Of Vienna in 2006. The abstracted map of the city is marked with small Space Invader icons that denote the exact locations of Invader’s work. At the very top of the work, a key of figures gives more information on Invader’s global Space Invaders Project, as he seeks to paste his work around the world. The ‘Wave’ number indicates how many times Invader has returned to the city, and the ‘Invasions’ number tells the viewer how many Invader works there are to find across the city. Next to these figures is a ‘Score’, based on Invader’s own scoring system, which highlights the success of this particular ‘Invasion’.

Every element of this map has been stylised with Invader’s signature Space Invader characters. Even the compass to the lower right of the composition is topped with a Space Invader, adding to the treasure map appeal of the work. Through this signed print, Invader invites you to play his game and explore the city to find his work throughout Vienna.

  • Anonymous street artist Invader adopted his pseudonym from the 1978 arcade game, Space Invaders, and has continually paid homage to retro, 8-bit video games throughout his career. His work has evolved from the original Space Invader motif since the early 2000s, with other icons such as Pac-Man, Pink Panther and even the Rubik’s Cube becoming staples in his imagery. Invading urban landscapes with his distinctive pixelated mosaic creations, Invader transcends the boundaries of traditional street art by combining playful nostalgia with an urban twist. His unique fusion of retro aesthetics and contemporary commentary has solidified his place in the global art scene.
