Meaning & Analysis

Carte d'Invasion De Bruxelles is part of Invader’s Maps collection which is closely associated with the artist’s critically acclaimed project: ‘The Space Invaders Project’. The project, which the artist started in 1998, involves Invader installing mosaics of the popular alien character from the arcade game Space Invaders onto the walls of various cities all over the world. The project has garnered international attention and has come to be regarded as one of the most widely recognised street art stunts in art history. Invader has ‘invaded’ 79 cities in 33 countries and the artist has even installed a mosaic alien in the International Space Station.

As is seen in Carte d'Invasion De Bruxelles, Invader started out producing physical maps which provided details of where his aliens could be found. At present the artist uses a digital database to keep track of his numerous ‘invasion waves’.

  • Anonymous street artist Invader adopted his pseudonym from the 1978 arcade game, Space Invaders, and has continually paid homage to retro, 8-bit video games throughout his career. His work has evolved from the original Space Invader motif since the early 2000s, with other icons such as Pac-Man, Pink Panther and even the Rubik’s Cube becoming staples in his imagery. Invading urban landscapes with his distinctive pixelated mosaic creations, Invader transcends the boundaries of traditional street art by combining playful nostalgia with an urban twist. His unique fusion of retro aesthetics and contemporary commentary has solidified his place in the global art scene.
