Meaning & Analysis

This work was produced for Invader’s global Space Invaders Project, this work charts the location of Invader’s work throughout the city of Miami. Like a treasure map, the locations of the street artist’s ‘Invasions’ are highlighted by small Space Invader icons. This interactive artwork seeks to remove art from the institution, and encourages Invader fans to take to the streets of Miami to view his iconic mosaic pieces.

Not only does Invader take art out of the institution with this project, but he also frees the Space Invader characters from the video game screen. Invasion Of Miami forms just one part of Invader’s global project, as the artist now has a total of 4056 ‘Invaders’ across 80 countries. At the bottom of this particular work, text is written in three languages like a real map, suggesting Invader’s international fan-base and the universal nature of his iconography. Like the other works in his Maps collection, Invasion Of Miami is as much a game as it is a work of art.

  • Anonymous street artist Invader adopted his pseudonym from the 1978 arcade game, Space Invaders, and has continually paid homage to retro, 8-bit video games throughout his career. His work has evolved from the original Space Invader motif since the early 2000s, with other icons such as Pac-Man, Pink Panther and even the Rubik’s Cube becoming staples in his imagery. Invading urban landscapes with his distinctive pixelated mosaic creations, Invader transcends the boundaries of traditional street art by combining playful nostalgia with an urban twist. His unique fusion of retro aesthetics and contemporary commentary has solidified his place in the global art scene.
