Meaning & Analysis

The abstract composition is made up of two blocks of colour which were painted using a sponge mop. This technique means that the blocks of colour are permeated by thick lines which draw attention to the texture of the artwork’s surface. The addition of diamond dust makes the artwork sparkle and harks back to the glitzy night clubs Warhol frequented in New York. Warhol refers to the Shadow collection as ‘disco-décor’ and the artworks were originally conceived to be hung together as wall decorations.

The majority of the artworks in the shadows project are dominated by black which gives the collection a sombre and moody feel. When hung together, the slight changes in colour and shape are intriguing as there seems to be no rule or logic governing the variations.
