Meaning & Analysis
Shadows I (F. & S. II.205) is a signed screen print with diamond dust on Arches 88 paper made by the renowned 20th century artist, Andy Warhol. Produced in 1979, the print comes in an edition size of 15 and shows an abstract composition which depicts a red blur against a dark purple backdrop. The print was inspired by the shadows created by a lamp on Warhol’s desk and the artist’s interest in shadows can be traced back to the shadowing techniques he used in many of his still life portraits of famous stars and celebrities like Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe.
The print is one of six screen prints that belong to Warhol’s first portfolio of shadow prints. The portfolio is part of a larger project, the Shadows project, which started when Warhol published 102 large paintings depicting abstract patterns of shadows that showed the interaction between light and darkness. The use of diamond dust in these prints makes the compositions sparkle and Warhol has described the works as ‘disco-décor’, explaining that as well as being considered abstract artworks, the pieces are also apt for decorating the walls of disco clubs.
Warhol published five portfolios of shadow prints in 1979 in collaboration with the printer Rupert Jasen Smith. The collection of prints were then exhibited at the Heiner Freidrich gallery in New York.
