Meaning & Analysis

Angus Cook, a filmmaker who Freud clearly took a liking to, sat for the artist over the period of 1985-90, and is the subject of at least seven paintings and seven etchings. Like one of his other etchings of Cook, Man Posing, this particular etching was produced alongside a painting with a similar composition. Within the etching, we see how Freud perceived the physicality of Cook's masculine form and described it in monochrome.

Though Freud rarely depicted men in his Naked Portraits, Naked Man On Bed is testament to his ability to capture his sitters with blunt honesty and psychological depth. Much like his Naked Portraits of female sitters, this work plays with conventional composition and viewpoints to create a unique and striking study.
