Meaning & Analysis

Angus Cook, a filmmaker who Freud clearly took a liking to, sat for the artist over the period of 1985-90, and is the subject of at least seven paintings and seven etchings. Even though Freud returned to depict Cook in a similar pose five years later, in Naked Man On Bed, there is something uniquely striking about Man Posing. Produced alongside his monumental painting Painter And Model (1986-87), this etching has a formidable level of detailing. Indeed, Freud's ability to convey the texture and nature of flesh with the etching needle is typical of his work. However, Man Posing demonstrates his command over an array of textures: from the grooves in the wooden floorboards, to the stuffing of the leather couch spilling out in the foreground.

Though Freud rarely depicted men in his Naked Portraits, Man Posing is testament to his ability to capture his sitters with blunt honesty and psychological depth. Within this particular etching, Cook gazes directly to the viewer - or to Freud - giving the work an even more rousing appeal.
