What Party (yellow on blue) is a signed screen print made by the renowned American artist and designer KAWS in 2020. Coming in an edition size of 100 the print shows a head and shoulders portrait of KAWS’ beloved cartoon character, Companion, rendered in bright yellow against a blue backdrop.
Companion features in many of KAWS’ artworks and is identifiable by his distinct figure which is reminiscent of Mickey Mouse as well as his skull and crossbone head and crossed out eyes. Companion is just one of a set of figurative characters created by KAWS. Other notable characters include Accomplice, Chum and Bendy. Many of KAWS’ cartoon characters are repeated throughout his artworks, recurring in different settings or in slightly different iterations.
What Party (yellow on blue) is part of the What Party collection. As well as another screen print, What Party (red on blue), KAWS created five Companion figures in black, white, pink, yellow and orange iterations. While KAWS’ characters were initially drawn in 2D and born out of his experimentations with graffiti, many of them have been realised in 3D. One of the most notable incidents of Companion being rendered in figure form was in 2012 when he was adapted into a balloon for Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
