Urge 7 is a signed screen print produced by the critically acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS in 2020. The print depicts Companion, KAWS’ iconic cartoon character. Companion is rendered in grey in the centre of the composition. The piece is brightened by various sets of hands in red and green which appear to be trying to obstruct the cartoon’s face. Each hand has a cross on it which matches Companion’s crossed out eyes.
This print is one of ten prints that compose the Urge collection. All of the prints in this collection depict Companion surrounded by gloved hands. By 2020, KAWS had become an international artist who had collaborated with celebrities such as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams, as well as notable brands like Nike, Comme des Garcon and Uniqlo. In this collection, KAWS returns to an early source of inspiration, as Companion is one of his oldest cartoon characters whose creation dates back to 1999.
As seen in this print, Companion is easily recognisable due to his inflated skull and crossbones head, crossed out eyes and Mickey Mouse-like body and gloved hands. The cartoon character is often incorporated into KAWS’ artworks alongside other cartoon characters created by the artist, such as Accomplice, Chum and Bendy. As well as creating his own cartoon characters, KAWS often appropriates and adapts various well-known cartoon characters for his works. Notable characters KAWS has incorporated into his artworks include Mickey Mouse, the Smurfs, SpongeBob Square Pants and The Simpsons.
American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
