Urge 5 is a signed screen print in colours produced by the renowned American artist and designer, KAWS in 2020. The print depicts Companion, one of KAWS’ most popular cartoon characters. Companion dominates the centre of the composition however his face is obscured by various brightly coloured cartoon hands that do not appear to belong to anyone. The vibrant colours used for the hands contrast with the plain white of the cartoon character, meaning they stand out in the composition and instantly seize the viewer’s attention.
This print is one of ten prints that compose the Urge collection. Every print in this collection depicts Companion surrounded by gloved hands. The crosses on the hands match Companion’s crossed out eyes. Crosses and crossed out eyes are a trademark feature of KAWS’ visual language and this collection captures the essence of KAWS’ artistic style, characterised by the incorporation of a set of distinct graphics, such as crosses and cartoon characters, as well as an emphasis on bold colours and use of thick black gestural lines.
KAWS’ style can be traced back to his origins in street art and graffiti, as well as his experience studying illustration at the New York School of Visual Arts and working for Jumbo Pictures as a freelance animator.
American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
