Meaning & Analysis

This print is part of the Urge collection, a body of ten prints, each of which depicts KAWS’ beloved cartoon character, Companion, in bright and vibrant colours. The collection captures the essence of KAWS’ artistic style, characterised by an emphasis on colour, the use of black gestural lines and the incorporation of a set of distinct graphics, such as the crosses seen in this print. KAWS often includes crosses in his artworks and crossed out eyes are a trademark feature of the artist’s visual language.

Companion is one of a set of cartoon characters created by KAWS that reappear throughout his artworks. Other notable characters include Bendy, Chum and Accomplice. As seen in these prints, the cartoon is easily recognised by its distinct Mickey Mouse-like body, skull and crossbones head, crossed out eyes and gloved hands.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
