Meaning & Analysis

Undefeated Billboard is part of the Companion collection, a selection of works produced by KAWS, all of which feature his iconic cartoon character, Companion. In each work, Companion is depicted in a different style and setting, reflecting KAWS’ boundless creativity. Companion was developed while KAWS was spray painting the streets of New York. Using spray paint, the artist would subvert adverts he found in the metro, phone booths and bus shelters, a practise that became known as ‘subvertising’. KAWS would embellish the adverts with cartoon characters, like Companion. Other characters the artist developed through subvertising were Accomplice, Chum and Bendy.

KAWS’ origins in street art and graffiti have led the artist to be compared to Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, two leading 20th century artists who emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. It is clear that these prolific artists deeply influenced KAWS and his artistic practices.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
