Tension 9 is a signed screen print on Saunders Waterford paper made by the ground-breaking American artist and designer, KAWS in 2019. The bold colours used in this print bring a sense of dynamism to the work which echoes KAWS’ experimental and exciting artistic style. The print also captures the essence of KAWS’ artistic style which is rooted in graffiti, street culture and animation and is characterised by an emphasis on colour, the incorporation of graphic shapes and the use of bold, gestural lines.
The print can be seen alongside nine other screen prints that compose the Tension collection. The prints in this collection are more abstract than other prints made by the artist, and do not feature any of his notable cartoon characters, such as Bendy, Chum, Accomplice or Companion.
KAWS’ artistic style is deeply influenced by his youth and the time he spent spray painting buildings in New Jersey, where the artist grew up. KAWS continued to practise graffiti when he moved to New York in the 1990s and developed a process known as ‘subvertising’ in which he would manipulate adverts he found in phone booths, bus shelters and metro stations, adding cartoon characters who would interact with the products being advertised.
American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
