Tension 3 is a signed screen print on Saunders Waterford paper made by the acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS. Produced in 2019, the print shows a unique composition of graffiti inspired shapes rendered in bold and vibrant colours. KAWS incorporates his signature crosses into the print, a trademark element of the artist’s visual language.
Tension 3 can be seen alongside nine other screen prints that compose the Tension collection. All the prints in this collection depict abstract arrangements of shapes and lines, meaning that the collection differs from others produced by KAWS, such as Blame Game and No Reply, which feature the artist’s signature cartoon characters. The Tension collection marks an experimental turn in the artist’s career, demonstrating KAWS’ artistic range and impressive creativity.
While the print is more abstract than many of KAWS’ other works, it perfectly captures the essence of KAWS’ artistic style which is rooted in graffiti, street culture and animation. KAWS started experimenting with graffiti from a young age and it was through spray painting buildings in New Jersey that the artist came up with his iconic name. Interestingly the combination of letters is devoid of any meaning or significance and was chosen due the way the letters looked together and their visual balance.
American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
