Tension 2 is a signed screen print on Saunders Waterford paper made by the ground-breaking American artist and designer, KAWS in 2019. The print depicts a unique composition of graffiti inspired shapes. KAWS uses a range of bright and vibrant colours in this print mixing red, yellow, green and purple to produce a dynamic and exciting print.
The print is part of the Tension collection, a series of ten screen prints which capture the essence of KAWS’ artistic style which is deeply rooted in graffiti, street culture and animation. KAWS’ distinct style can be traced back to his youth and his time spent spray painting buildings in New Jersey, where the artist grew up. The artist went on to hone his graffiti skills in New York, where KAWS would spray paint over adverts he found in bus shelters and phone booths.
Despite harking back to the artist’s youth, the Tension collection was produced later on in KAWS’ artistic career. By this point, KAWS was an internationally recognised artist with a strong global following and had collaborated with prominent celebrities such as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams as well as iconic brands like Nike, Comme des Garçons and Uniqlo.
American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
