Tension 1 is a signed screen print on Saunders Waterford paper made by the critically acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS. Produced in 2019, the print depicts an abstract composition of graffiti inspired shapes. The print captures KAWS’ distinct visual style, characterised by an emphasis on colour and a set of distinct graphics. While it is difficult to discern what the shapes in the composition are meant to be, the viewer can make out KAWS’ trademark crossed out eyes amongst the dynamic array of shapes.
The print comes in an edition size of 100 and is part of the Tension collection, a series of ten screen prints, all of which depict unique compositions of bright and bold lines and shapes rendered in a graffiti style.
Tension 1 along with the other prints in the Tension collection are more abstract than many of KAWS’ other prints and do not feature any of his notable cartoon characters. The collection shows KAWS’ impressive range as an artist and his experimental flair.
American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
