Meaning & Analysis

Running Chum is part of the Chum collection, a body of works made by KAWS all of which depict this beloved cartoon character. Most of the prints in the collection are rendered in black and white, making this print stand out due to its lively colour composition.

Chum was inspired by the Michelin Man, one of the most recognisable mascots of the 20th century. The character was originally drawn by the French cartoonist, Marius Rossillon, who created the mascot for the Michelin tyre company. KAWS adapts the Michelin Man by adding his signature crossed out eyes and skull and crossbone head. By taking and appropriating this well-known figure, which KAWS renders in his distinct graphic style, KAWS makes a comment on capitalism, global consumerism and copyright, something the artist often does in his artworks.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
