Meaning & Analysis

The No Reply collection is composed of 10 screen prints, all of which show parts of a cartoon character’s face, or other cartoon inspired shapes. The collection captures KAWS’ distinct artistic style, characterised by an emphasis on colour, bold gestural lines and a set of distinct graphics. This print features KAWS’ signature crosses, a visual motif that is repeated throughout the artist’s artworks.

KAWS has had a longstanding fascination with cartoons and they have inspired many of his artworks. As well as creating his own cartoon characters and unique compositions, like the No Reply collection, KAWS has also taken familiar cartoon characters and adapted them using his unique visual language. Notable cartoons that KAWS has adapted include The Simpsons, SpongeBob Square Pants and Astro Boy.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
