Meaning & Analysis

The print can be seen alongside nine other screen prints which compose the No Reply collection. The collection of prints are all inspired by cartoon imagery and show cropped sections of cartoon characters, which always leave the viewer wanting to see more.

Produced in 2015, the No Reply collection came at a point in KAWS’ artistic career in which he had become a critically acclaimed and internationally recognised artist. By this point, KAWS had collaborated with cultural icons such as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams, and his artworks were highly sought after on the art market. KAWS’ incorporation of cartoon imagery into his works blurs the boundary between high and low culture, demanding that popular cartoons be seen as high art.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
