Meaning & Analysis

The print is part of KAWS’ No Reply collection, a body of 10 screen prints, all of which are inspired by cartoon imagery and depict compositions made of cartoon characters’ faces. The collection captures KAWS’ unique visual language which was rooted in animation and street culture. The artist studied illustration at the New York School of Visual Arts, and then went on to work as a freelance animator for Jumbo Pictures where he worked on a range of famous television animation series. While in New York, KAWS would frequently take to the streets with a can of spray paint. It was through his experimentation with graffiti that KAWS developed his unique set of cartoon inspired graphics.

KAWS’ visual style has been likened to that of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, two leading 20th century artists who emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
