Meaning & Analysis

The print is one of 10 screen prints that form the No Reply collection. The body of prints can be compared to KAWS’ Blame Game collection produced in 2014, which similarly depicts close-up cropped portions of an unknown cartoon character’s face. Both collections use a mixture of bright colours and employ black gestural lines, a signature element of KAWS’ visual language.

No Reply 2 captures KAWS’ distinct artistic style, characterised by an emphasis on colour and distinct set of graphics. This print features KAWS’ iconic crossed out eyes, which the artist frequently incorporates into his artworks. While this collection features unidentifiable cartoon characters, KAWS is well-known for creating a set of stock cartoon characters that re-appear throughout his artworks. Companion, Chum, Bendy and Accomplice were all designed by KAWS and have become synonymous with the artist’s name.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
