Meaning & Analysis

When looked at in isolation, it is difficult for the viewer to discern what they are looking out. However, when viewed alongside the other works in the collection, it becomes apparent that KAWS is depicting the much-loved cartoon character, Snoopy the dog (from the Peanuts comic strip). Throughout the collection, KAWS renders Snoopy in a loose, expressionist style. This print is one of the more abstract prints in the series, differing from Man’s Best Friend 1 which shows Snoopy in his entirety. Throughout the collection, KAWS presents an evolution of a recognisable cartoon, bringing it to contemporary audiences in a new and daring form.

KAWS often takes inspiration from cartoon characters for his artworks and was fascinated with ‘how infused a cartoon could become in people's lives; the impact it could have, compared to regular politics.’ KAWS’ interest in cartoons can be traced back to his early work as a freelance animator when he worked for Jumbo Pictures on famous cartoon series, such as 101 Dalmatians, Daria and Doug.
