Man’s Best Friend 2 is a signed screen print on Saunders Waterford High White paper made by the acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS in 2016. The print, which comes in an edition size of 100, depicts Snoopy the dog, the beloved anthropomorphic beagle from the Peanuts comic strip. KAWS renders Snoopy using thick black and white lines in a scrawled, sketch-like style. The close- up of the cartoon character, along with this style of drawing, makes it difficult for the viewer to discern who or what they are looking at, despite how universally recognisable Snoopy normally is.
The print can be seen alongside nine other screen prints which form the Man’s Best Friend collection. In this body of artworks, KAWS pays homage to the much-loved cartoon character, which reflects the artist’s love for cartoons and animation. KAWS’ interest in cartoons traces back to his time studying illustration in New York at the School of Visual Arts and his early career as a freelance animator at Jumbo Pictures, where he designed the backgrounds for animation series such as 101 Dalmatians, Daria and Doug.
The style of Man’s Best Friend 2 differs from many of KAWS’ other works. The artist often uses bold and vibrant colours in his prints, along with a distinctive graphic style that resonates with street art and graffiti. The different visual style used in this collection capture’s KAWS’ artistic diversity and creative flair.
American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
