Blame Game X is a signed screen print in colours on Saunders Waterford High White paper produced by the critically acclaimed American artist and designer, KAWS. Made in 2014, the print depicts a close-up portion of a cartoon character’s face. The wide eyes and toothy grin suggest the character is shocked or surprised, and the bright colours used in the print add to this sense of excitement. The composition is dominated by a variety of bold and vibrant colours, reflecting the artist’s love of colour and desire to experiment with different combinations and blocks of colour.
Blame Game X is part of the Blame Game collection, which is composed of 10 screen prints, each of which depicts the same cartoon character. Every print in the collection favours the close-up, only ever showing a small portion of the character’s face. The use of bold, black gestural lines and a flat, graphic style is characteristic of KAWS’ unique visual language, and the crossed out eyes seen in this print are a repeated visual motif that KAWS incorporates into most of his artworks.
KAWS’ graphic style is often compared to artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, two leading 20th century artists who emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the 1980s. Haring’s impressive collection of repeated icons and motifs, such as the radiant baby, angel, flying devil and barking dog resonate strongly with KAWS’ own artistic practice and the repeated motifs that run throughout his works.
American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
