Meaning & Analysis

Blame Game V is part of KAWS’ Blame Game collection, which is composed of 10 screen prints, all of which focus on isolating a section of a cartoon character’s face. The series captures KAWS’ animation and graffiti inspired visual language, and also features many of the artist’s trademark visual motifs, such as crossed out eyes.

KAWS’ experimentation with bold colour and screen printing in the Blame Game collection is reminiscent of the work of the beloved 20th century artist, Andy Warhol. Warhol, also known as the father of Pop Art, clearly influenced KAWS and his approach to art. Warhol often took inspiration from popular culture, transforming everyday objects such as shoes and Campbell’s soup cans into pieces of fine art. This is apparent in KAWS’ work and his love of popular animations and cartoon characters.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
