Meaning & Analysis

The print is one of 10 screen prints that compose KAWS’ Blame Game collection. Each print in the collection captures an isolated portion of the same cartoon character’s face. The collection is marked by the playful use of colour and bold, gestural lines. KAWS’ experience studying illustration and working as a freelance animator in New York for Jumbo Pictures is felt strongly in all 10 prints.

The prints in the Blame Game collection all include KAWS’ iconic crossed out eyes. As seen in Blame Game II, this visual motif has become a trademark feature of the artist’s graphic style. The Blame Game collection captures KAWS’ love for cartoons and the artist has created an impressive cast of figurative characters and motifs throughout his artistic career, some of which date back to the start of his career in the 1990s.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
