Meaning & Analysis

The print is part of a collection of 10 screen prints, each of which depicts a close-up section of the same cartoon character’s face. The prints in the collection are all rendered in bright colours and the cartoon character is drawn using bold, black gestural lines. The Blame Game collection captures KAWS’ signature visual language which is marked by a flat graphic style and love for colour.

KAWS’ style was clearly influenced by television animations and cartoons. Before becoming a critically acclaimed artist, KAWS worked as a freelance animator in New York for Jumbo Pictures, where he worked on various animation series such as 101 Dalmatians, Daria and Doug. KAWS’ experience working in animation shines through in his prints and is felt particularly strongly in the Blame Game collection.

  • American-born artist, KAWS, is renowned for his cartoon figures, prints and 'subvertisements'. Born in 1974 to the burgeoning New York graffiti and street art scene, KAWS has successfully combined fine art and pop culture to create his own lane in the urban art world. His distinct aesthetic, characterised by playful figures and a subversive take on pop culture icons, has earned him acclaim in both the art and mainstream realms. Most notable is his Companion figure which has achieved global critical and commercial success, and has formed collaborations with the likes of Nike and Dior Homme.
