Meaning & Analysis

Together with its counterpart, Rubrik Kubrik, The Shining, this piece represents Invader’s tribute to Stanley Kubrick, whose unsettling and disturbing movie characters have earned a place in popular imagery. The character, Alex DeLarge, renamed Alex Burgess in the movie, has been called by the American Film Institute the 12th greatest movie villain of all times, whereas Jack Torrance, the main character of The Shining, occupies the 25th position.

An example of Invader’s more figurative work, the print offers a rendition of Alex through Invader’s rubikcubism signature style. One of the most difficult to build, for this piece Invader had to twist dozens of Cubes to obtain entirely blue facades, through which the artist interprets the strong chiaroscuro of the original movie scene.

Undoubtedly, the print reveals once again Invader’s fascination with popular villains, detectable in The Shining and in the series of prints entitled Bad Men (see here for Scream II) that he will produce later.
