Meaning & Analysis

Against a bright green backdrop, Invader plays on the tag 'I am Paris’ by replacing the ‘am’ with a large red alien. The alien is a character from the popular arcade game, Space Invaders, which inspired the project which Invader has been working on since 1998. The Space Invaders project involves Invader travelling all over the world and installing ceramic mosaics onto the walls of various bustling cities. Invader calls these trips ‘invasion waves’ and aims to install between 20 to 50 mosaics per city he visits.

The Invasion Guides provide detailed information regarding the location of the mosaics installed by Invader and the artist also includes maps and pictures to emphasise the impressive nature of the project. Invasion Paris 01 details Invader’s first invasion of the French capital, Paris, however the artist has now visited over 30 countries and even installed a mosaic in the International Space Station in 2015.

  • Anonymous street artist Invader adopted his pseudonym from the 1978 arcade game, Space Invaders, and has continually paid homage to retro, 8-bit video games throughout his career. His work has evolved from the original Space Invader motif since the early 2000s, with other icons such as Pac-Man, Pink Panther and even the Rubik’s Cube becoming staples in his imagery. Invading urban landscapes with his distinctive pixelated mosaic creations, Invader transcends the boundaries of traditional street art by combining playful nostalgia with an urban twist. His unique fusion of retro aesthetics and contemporary commentary has solidified his place in the global art scene.
