Meaning & Analysis

The Wave, a lithograph in colour released in 1990 in an edition of 50, is simultaneously abstract, yet realist and is just one in a number of interpretations of the sea Hockney has executed in his artistic career, now spanning several decades. A double crested dark blue wave dominates the foreground, with two smaller green-hued waves on either side in the middle distance. The background is a sea of light and dark blue waves, receding to the horizon. In the top third of the painting, three brushstrokes linger in mid air, the colour of each stroke corresponding with the main colours within the composition below. It is this artistic addition that adds an air of abstraction to an otherwise predominantly realist composition. Hockney’s brilliant swirls of colour inject vigor back into the tradition of landscape painting. Despite depicting the natural world, Hockney adopts a heightened use of colour, bringing a palpable sense of vibrancy and energy to the lithograph.
