Meaning & Analysis

The Elements- Earth is one of four prints that belong to The Elements series. In this series, Hirst takes inspiration from the early scientific notion of the four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water. For thousands of years, it has been taught in Eastern and Western philosophies that the universe is made up of elements that need to be balanced, in perfect harmony, to support the flow of spiritual energy.

Hirst has always been drawn to the elements. He first symbolised the elements in his 1992 artwork Pharmacy. In this piece, Hirst showed four glass bottles, filled with coloured liquids to represent each of the elements. Hirst has a longstanding interest in questions of life and death, illness, medicine and cures. The Elements- Earth resonates with this fascination as it was believed that the elements could be used to heal the sick before the discovery of modern medicine.

  • Damien Hirst, born in Bristol in 1965, is often hailed the enfant terrible of the contemporary art world. His provocative works challenge conventions and his conceptual brilliance spans installations, paintings, and sculptures, often exploring themes of mortality and the human experience. As a leading figure of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement in the late '80s, Hirst's work has dominated the British art scene for decades and has become renowned for being laced with controversy, thus shaping the dialogue of modern art.
