Meaning & Analysis

The Cure (bright orange, orchid, air force blue) is one of thirty silkscreen prints that compose Hirst’s The Cure series. Each print in the series depicts a two-colour pill against a plain backdrop, often in a bright and vibrant colour. The pills appear larger than life in the prints. This manipulation of scale is a deliberate decision on the part of Hirst to represent the confidence of pharmaceutical companies in their pharmaceutical products and their ability to cure anyone and anything.

Hirst has had a long-standing interest in medicine and the pharmaceutical industry. Hirst first explored this theme in his Medicine Cabinet series, produced while he was studying Fine Art at Goldsmiths College in London in the late 1980s. Hirst was drawn to medicine because he was interested in the way people interact with medicine and its healing properties, making medicine become a contemporary belief system, alongside religion.
