Meaning & Analysis

H9-7 Loyalty is part of Hirst’s H9 The Virtues series. One of eight prints, each print in this series depicts a cherry blossom tree. The series is part of a wider project dedicated to the cherry blossoms. Hirst has created over 100 works which will be exhibited for the first time at the Fondation Cartier in Paris in July, 2021. The prints in the H9 The Virtues series can be identified due to their unique names. The artist chose to name the prints after the ‘Eight Virtues of Bushidō’ according to Nitobe Inazō -Justice, Courage, Mercy, Politeness, Honesty, Honour, Loyalty, and Control.

The print captures Hirst’s love for spots. When looked at closely, the viewer can make out lots of tiny spots which, when arranged meticulously together, make up the cherry blossoms. The influences of Impressionism, Pointillism and Action Painting are apparent in H9-7 Loyalty, as well as this long standing love of spots.
