Meaning & Analysis

H9-5 Honesty is part of the H9 The Virtues series. In this series, Hirst has produced eight prints, all of which depict magnificent cherry blossom trees in characteristic pinks and blues. Interestingly, Hirst names the prints after the ‘Eight Virtues of Bushidō’ according to Nitobe Inazō -Justice, Courage, Mercy, Politeness, Honesty, Honour, Loyalty, and Control. The inspiration for the series comes from Hirst’s childhood. He recounts how he remembers seeing his mother paint a cherry blossom tree, and how he was always fascinated by the tree that grew outside his bedroom window, comparing it to a clock, as the blossoming of the tree would come at the same time every year.

The burst of pink in H9-5 Honesty reflects the spontaneous joy of Spring, in which flowers blossom and bloom. With this spontaneity, however, comes a sense of transience. Hirst explains how “blossoms are optimistic and bright yet fragile,” as they only appear for a finite amount of time each year. The print is therefore imbued with messages regarding beauty, life and death.
