Meaning & Analysis

The etchings that make up both volumes of In A Spin, The Action Of The World Upon Things are based on Hirst’s ionic spin paintings that he began producing in the ’90s. The spin paintings were created by Hirst using a spin machine in his studio, onto which circular canvases were attached and paint poured on from above whilst the canvas spun. This technique resulted in a set of works resembling Abstract Expressionist paintings despite the fact that they are produced by mechanical means.

In A Spin, The Action Of The World Upon Things volume I and II were created after Booth Clibborn asked Hirst to make another large print project since his first in 1999. The portfolio boxes each had an original spin painting on the cover and they were painted with household paint, using the same spin machine used for the etching series.

  • Damien Hirst, born in Bristol in 1965, is often hailed the enfant terrible of the contemporary art world. His provocative works challenge conventions and his conceptual brilliance spans installations, paintings, and sculptures, often exploring themes of mortality and the human experience. As a leading figure of the Young British Artists (YBA) movement in the late '80s, Hirst's work has dominated the British art scene for decades and has become renowned for being laced with controversy, thus shaping the dialogue of modern art.
