This version of Banksy's 2004 Pulp Fiction screen-print is one of 8 stretched artist-proofs. It is a playful, monochromatic reimagination of Quentin Tarantino’s neo-noir classic. Substituting John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson’s guns for yellow bananas as weapons, Banksy offers a quirky take on the cultish nature of film and art.as a stretched version of the original print in an edition of 8.
Pulp Fiction is a bold, striking black and white piece clearly informed by the neo-noir aesthetic of Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 cult film of the same title. The artwork shows Pulp Fiction actors John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson pointing bright yellow bananas at an out of shot antagonist. Naturally, in the film these were guns, and through this interpretation Banksy formulates an anti-gun and anti-violence statement by using popular culture and American cult film as a context. The film Pulp Fiction, as well as Tarantino’s oeuvre and style as a whole is famous for excessive violence, and so with this print Banksy might just be commenting on the ridiculousness of that in itself. Other famous artworks, such as CND Soldiers showing a couple of soldiers painting a bright red peace sign, as well as Love Is In The Air depicting a masked protester throwing a bouquet of flowers, express a similarly powerful call for peaceful resolutions of conflict.
Renowned British street artist, Banksy, is the enigmatic figure behind some of the most subversive works in the Urban Art scene. Despite his anonymity, the artists' disruptive stunts have not only gained him notoriety, but they have vocalised his stance on many social and political issues. As seen with the likes of Girl With Balloon and Napalm, Banksy uses his distinctive stencil technique to produce thought-provoking commentaries on challenging themes. The showcase of rebellion that lines his work has caused his secondary market value to soar in recent years, propelling him to the top of the Urban Art scene.
