Meaning & Analysis

Choose Your Weapon (khaki) features a hooded young man in dark clothing with a barking dog on a leash over a blocked khaki background. The barking dog motif is referencing Street Artist Keith Haring and as such the Choose Your Weapon series is considered a homage to Haring. Haring’s graphic style deeply contrasts Banksy’s hyper-realistic stencils to help emphasise his message, which is thought to be a comment on London (and British) gangs who often have dogs known for their aggressive temperament.

The white training shoes worn by the figure may be an amusing nod to the 'Reebok Classics' generation. The man in this Banksy print has chosen man's best friend as his weapon, whereas Banksy has chosen street art. This Banksy print is highly coveted because it was the last time prints were available for sale to the public.

  • Renowned British street artist, Banksy, is the enigmatic figure behind some of the most subversive works in the Urban Art scene. Despite his anonymity, the artists' disruptive stunts have not only gained him notoriety, but they have vocalised his stance on many social and political issues. As seen with the likes of Girl With Balloon and Napalm, Banksy uses his distinctive stencil technique to produce thought-provoking commentaries on challenging themes. The showcase of rebellion that lines his work has caused his secondary market value to soar in recent years, propelling him to the top of the Urban Art scene.
