Banksy's 2002, Every Time I Make Love To You I Think Of Someone Else, is a darkly humorous stencil on canvas work, from an edition of 5. In front of a pink heart, two WWII-era tanks in black and white try to run one another over, suggesting Banksy’s pessimistic view of war.
Banksy renders two tanks in black and white and the right tank is trying to attack the other by running it over. The left vehicle bears a strong resemblance to a British Humber armoured car which was one of the most widely produced cars during World War II.
This canvas is one of Banksy’s earlier artworks and was exhibited at Banksy’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles at the 33 ⅓ Gallery. The image captures how Banksy’s style developed overtime, with the artist abandoning freehand painting in favour of the stencil technique. Banksy started using stencils in the 1990s because it was a quick and simple method to produce his artworks. The technique enabled the artist to reproduce images in a fraction of the time which helped him avoid being caught by the police.
The canvas carries a strong political message: modern warfare is the equivalent of a loveless relationship in which the opposing sides are simply going through the motions of war without thinking about the consequences or motivations for their actions.
Renowned British street artist, Banksy, is the enigmatic figure behind some of the most subversive works in the Urban Art scene. Despite his anonymity, the artists' disruptive stunts have not only gained him notoriety, but they have vocalised his stance on many social and political issues. As seen with the likes of Girl With Balloon and Napalm, Banksy uses his distinctive stencil technique to produce thought-provoking commentaries on challenging themes. The showcase of rebellion that lines his work has caused his secondary market value to soar in recent years, propelling him to the top of the Urban Art scene.
