Born in 1968 in Germany, Tillmans grew up during a period marked by the stirrings of digital revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Showing early promise, his interest in the world around him was channelled into photography, capturing moments that were as much about the subject as they were about the act of looking itself. He studied at the Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design in England, where he honed his craft and began to shape his idiosyncratic style.
Tillmans' development was marked by his unique treatment of everyday moments and his navigation between culture and subculture. This was evident in his breakthrough installation and photobook Soldiers–The Nineties, which captured the lives of young Londoners and the fluidity of contemporary urban life. His work has evolved over time, encompassing a broad range of subjects explored through a variety of techniques, including traditional photography, digital manipulation, and abstract photographic works that push the boundaries of the medium.
His collaborations and influences are as eclectic as his art, drawing inspiration from the world of music, youth culture, and social movements. Tillmans has consistently engaged with current events and social issues, using his photography as a platform for activism and commentary. His ability to capture the essence of a moment or movement has made him a significant voice in both art and culture.
Tillmans has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including the prestigious Turner Prize, making history as the first photographer and first non-British artist to receive the award. His work has been featured in major exhibitions worldwide, with solo shows at renowned institutions such as the Tate Modern in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
