The Golden Mile is an etching on paper released in an edition size of 300 in 2012 by Young British Artist, Tracey Emin. Depicting Margate's coastal landscape, this print forms part of the Childhood collection. At the centre of a white paper background is Emin’s imagining of the Margate of her youth. The landmarks of the coast are delineated with thin, sketchy lines, and small figures appear on the beach in the foreground.
This carefully rendered etching of the coastal landscape of Margate is the artist's homage to her childhood hometown. With her distinctively misspelt annotation on the building to the far left of the print - labelled “DREEMLAND” - and the recognisable illustration of Margate’s clocktower, The Golden Mile is a work at once relatable to anyone familiar with Emin’s hometown. The whispy, delicate lines are characteristic of Emin's ouvre and the personal attachment to the subject of the print is a recurring theme throughout her work.
