Born on 29 November 1915 in La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Luis Tomasello emerged within the Kinetic Art and Op Art movements. He began his artistic journey attending the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón, where he honed his skills in painting and drawing. After further studies at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes Ernesto de la Cárcova, Tomasello's early works were influenced by figurative painting techniques, but he soon gravitated towards geometric abstraction.
In 1951, Tomasello ventured to Europe, where he would eventually settle in Paris in 1957. This move marked a turning point in his career, as he began to collaborate with leading figures in the Kinetic Art movement, including Victor Vasarely and Jesús Rafael Soto. His innovative approach to art, characterised by the interplay of light and geometric forms, allowed him to explore perception and movement, which became central to his oeuvre.
Tomasello's artistic evolution is marked by a series of notable achievements and exhibitions. His works, particularly the Atmosphères Chromoplastiques series, exemplify his fascination with light and colour, creating a vibrant dialogue between the viewer and the artwork. His prints often feature white-on-white designs that challenge the viewer's perception and engage them in a dynamic visual experience.
Throughout his career, Tomasello participated in numerous exhibitions across Europe and Latin America, gaining recognition for his contributions to Contemporary Art. His artworks have been included in prestigious collections, including the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2017, one of his works, Atmosphère Chromoplastique No. 404, set a record at auction, selling for $250,000, underscoring his significance in the art market.
On January 17 2014, Tomasello died at the age of 98 in Paris. His legacy is defined by his contributions to Kinetic Art and his exploration of the interaction of light, space, and form.
