Biography

Louise Nevelson was born in 1899 in Pereiaslav, Ukraine. Her family emigrated to the United States when she was young, settling in Maine. Nevelson's artistic inclinations emerged early, and she pursued art studies at the Art Students League in New York in the early 1930s. A formative period in her career came when she worked as an assistant to Diego Rivera, which broadened her exposure to modernist movements.

Nevelson's early work was influenced by Cubism and Surrealism, but it was the development of her signature style in the 1950s that solidified her reputation. She became known for her large-scale assemblages made from found wood, which she would arrange in complex geometric compositions and paint in monochromatic colours, often black or white. Her works, such as Sky Cathedral, demonstrated a mastery of form and space that set her apart in the world of modern sculpture.

In the 1940s, she began experimenting with found objects, which would eventually lead to the creation of her signature assemblages. Her early pieces combined abstract expressionism's spontaneity with cubism's structural sensibilities.

In the 1950s, Nevelson began creating the large-scale works for which she became famous. She would gather discarded wood and other materials, arranging them into intricate patterns and forms before painting them in uniform colours. This approach gave her sculptures a sense of unity and abstraction that was revolutionary at the time. Her works, like Dawn's Wedding Feast, were often spiritual in nature, evoking a sense of ritual and mystery.
