Biography

In 1930, Bertoia moved to the United States, where he would later enrol at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. It was here, under the tutelage of esteemed figures such as Walter Gropius and Edmund N. Bacon, that Bertoia honed his craft, developing an understanding of material properties and artistic composition.

Bertoia's development was marked by a relentless pursuit of exploring the interplay between metal and space. His early work in jewellery design and metalwork laid a foundation for the techniques and philosophies that would underpin his later creations. It was during the 1940s and 1950s, a period marked by exploration and experimentation, that Bertoia truly found his voice as an artist. He began to create organic forms and intricate, welded sculptures that earned him critical acclaim.

In industrial design, Bertoia's collaboration with Florence and Hans Knoll proved pivotal. In 1952, he designed the Bertoia Collection for Knoll, featuring the celebrated Diamond Chair – a masterpiece of welded steel that is airy yet strong, a triumph of open form over structural constraints. This collection cemented Bertoia's reputation as a visionary in modern design.

Beyond the visual, Bertoia was fascinated by the aural qualities of his chosen materials. From the late 1960s onwards, he delved into the creation of Sonambient sculptures, interactive pieces that produce sound when touched or activated by natural forces. These works exemplify Bertoia's innovative spirit and his desire to engage with the sensory experiences of viewers and listeners.

Throughout his career, Bertoia's work was showcased in several major exhibitions, and his sculptures are held in the collections of prestigious institutions worldwide. Harry Bertoia's mastery of metal and his experimental ethos have significantly influenced the fields of art and design. His legacy endures through the resonant tones of his sound sculptures and the timeless elegance of his furniture designs, reminding us of the boundless potential of creative exploration.

I used My Art Broker for the first time and was amazed at how simple they made the whole process. Jasper was excellent. He negotiated a price for me, then arranged everything else, such as collection and checking out the provenance and condition of the piece. I will use them again in the future.
