Biography

Renowned for her enigmatic portraits and groups of figures, Tabouret captures the nuances of human experience, positioning her as a significant voice in the discourse of Contemporary Art. Her artworks exude an ethereal emotionality. Born in 1981 in Pertuis, France, Tabouret's journey through the art world began at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she honed her craft and developed a distinctive style characterised by a lush colour palette and painterly brush strokes.

Tabouret's artistic evolution is marked by a series of phases, each marking a deepening exploration into the human condition. Her oeuvre, characterised by a distinctive use of texture and a vibrant palette, invites viewers into intimate inner worlds. The figures she portrays, often isolated or in groups, seem to exist out of time and place, evoking a sense of universality in their silent communication.

Her Makeup series, exemplified by Makeup (Froufrou) from 2016, encapsulates her exploration of identity, gender roles and transformation. The series focuses on adolescents, drawing from personal archives, online sources, and cultural clichés to delve into the nuances of femininity within a broader societal framework. Her process begins with painting a child's portrait, which she then covers with makeup, a symbolic gesture that speaks to both painting and the act of masking.

Tabouret explains, “[f]irst I paint a portrait of a child—nice and tidy... Then I cover it with makeup as one of a child’s first primitive gestures related to painting. The makeup is about painting, but also about wearing a mask.” The messily applied makeup evokes feelings of chaos or brutality, offering a powerful commentary on the pervasive societal constructs of femininity.

In addition to painting, Tabouret has made significant contributions to printmaking, a practice that develops the themes explored through her painting. Her monotypes prints, including Makeup (Orange & Shadows), create a play between transparency and opacity, further exploring themes of identity, gender and conflict. This print, with its layered textures and vibrant hues, exemplifies how Tabouret’s printmaking extends the emotive visual qualities of her paintings into a different medium.

The legacy of Tabouret is one of introspective inner worlds and revelation. Through her paintings, she uncompromisingly delves into human emotion. Her impact lies in the silent dialogues her figures initiate, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of Contemporary Art.
